9.18.15: Week In Review
Dear Friend,
We had a lot to celebrate this week – Constitution Day, the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, National POW/MIA Recognition Day, and the birthday of our U.S. Air Force. It is important we take time to commemorate these days of recognition that make us uniquely American.
Sacred Heart Of Jesus Parish
Eighth graders, and chaperones, from Sacred Heart Of Jesus Parish in Wadsworth traveled to Washington, D.C. this week for their annual school trip to the nation’s capital. It was great to greet them before their Capitol tour and discuss with them the happenings in Washington and what it is like to represent them in Ohio’s 16th Congressional District.
Introducing #TransportationTuesday: Highway Trust Fund
Congress needs to get serious about passing a long-term solution to fix our deteriorating infrastructure. Every Tuesday leading up to our next Highway Trust Fund vote I will let you know why via social media. I have introduced legislation – Bridge to Sustainable Infrastructure Act – that would provide 10 years of funding for our highway trust fund.
In the 16th District:
Internet Safety
The Online Safety Roadshow is a Google program to educate parents and students on internet safety. I hosted this educational program at North Canton Middle School. As a father of three, I discussed the importance of internet safety for our kids during this time of rapid technology advancement. Watch here or click on the picture below, and read here to learn more the event.
Stop the HIT
I discussed the Health Insurance Tax (HIT) with small business in Ohio. The taxes and reforms that were put in place by the Affordable Care Act to change our nation’s health care system have placed a burden on business owners. This is including the Health Insurance Tax that is imposed on small businesses. As a former small business owner, I understand how small businesses are negatively impacted by the regulations that Washington places on their companies. In fact, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) estimates that Ohio alone will lose 5,900 jobs as a direct result of the Health Insurance Tax. On top of that, the same study finds that Ohio’s small businesses will lose $1 billion in sales thanks to this new tax. All told, Ohioans will be forced to pay $5 billion to the federal government over the next 10 years thanks to the Health Insurance Tax. Read more about the event here.
Elected Officials Breakfast
I hosted an ‘Elected Officials Breakfast’ at MAPS Air Museum in North Canton to discuss our community progress and how we can grow our economy as community leaders. Thank you to everyone who joined, it was a great event and productive dialogue.
As always read my Weekly Column here about the Cadillac Tax.
Next week, our nation’s capital will welcome His Holiness Pope Francis. He will address a joint meeting of Congress, and the American people. This is the first time in history a Pope will take part in this tradition, which dates back to 1824.
