Good Morning,

If anyone knows me, they know I am a big believer in budgets. This is how our families back home run their households. It’s how farms and manufacturers across Ohio run their businesses. You prioritize dollars and spend within your means, something Washington can’t figure out. It’s like monopoly money down here which is why it's vital we follow regular order and that committees pass budgets to work within. This week, I spoke in support of the budget for FY2019 at the House Budget Committee Markup. The budget is a strong step in the right direction – balancing not in just ten years, but nine years. This budget addresses our country’s spending problem while also ensuring that our armed forces have the resources they need to keep us safe. Watch my statement here.

Washington Wrap Up

I’m extremely proud to announce that my legislation, the Strengthening Partnerships to Prevent Opioid Abuse Act passed unanimously in the House this week. Keep an eye out for my op-ed that will run in the Cincinnati Enquirer providing a deep dive into the bill. I wrote this bill to facilitate a greater and more meaningful collaboration between CMS and industry stakeholders to identify instances in which a provider is overprescribing opioids or is engaging in fraud and abuse and endangering the well-being of America’s seniors.  It now moves on to the Senate.

I was also glad to meet with the Ohio Farm Bureau Board of Trustees this week to discuss how Washington can create policies to benefit our farming community.  The organization represents agriculture from all 88 of our counties.  It was great that the House came together to pass the Farm Bill during their trip to Washington.  With more than 70,000 farms across Ohio, it’s vital that I find federal solutions to benefit this industry.

District Doings

My district staff interviewed Richard Gedeon for the Veterans History Project (VHP) through the Library of Congress this week. Richard was a fighter pilot for the Army Air Corps during World War II. Thank you for your service and commitment to our country.

They also had a very busy schedule of events, touring the National First Ladies Library, the Stark County Courthouse, and the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum in Canton. This was a great opportunity to learn about U.S. history in our district and about the lives of President William McKinley and his wife Ida McKinley.
