Rep. Jim Renacci (OH-16) today released the below statement after voting in favor of H.R. 33, the Protecting Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Act:
“As a former volunteer firefighter and former mayor of Wadsworth, I know that our volunteer fire companies and emergency responders rely primarily on donations to fund their operations. In fact, nearly 90 percent of all fire departments are volunteers. If these volunteers are forced to comply with the employer mandate provision within the president’s health care law, there is no question that many volunteer fire companies will have no choice but to close their doors because they lack the funding to continue operations.
“I was proud to support the Protecting Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Act, a bill that exempts volunteer firefighters and emergency responders from the employer mandate. It’s a commonsense bill that will not only ensure the vitality of our local fire companies, it will also help keep our communities safe.”
