Rep. Jim Renacci (OH-16) today voted in favor of the Success and Opportunity Through Charter Schools Act, legislation that will strengthen the charter school program and allow successful charter school models to be replicated nationwide. It passed the House with broad bipartisan support.
“Every American deserves access to a quality education. In Northeast Ohio, we have seen firsthand the successes of Breakthrough Schools, the highest-performing network of free, public charter schools in Ohio,” said Rep. Jim Renacci. “Charter schools continue to get results and their students are excelling. Enrollment has doubled in the past six years, yet nearly one million students are currently on charter school wait lists due to lack of enrollment slots. I was proud to support legislation that will strengthen the charter school program and allow successful schools, like Breakthrough Schools in Cleveland, the opportunity to grow and provide an excellent education to today’s young students.”
Breakthrough Charter Schools is a nationally recognized network of schools that was formed in 2010 by three of the highest-performing public charter schools in Cleveland. Their vision is to further Greater Cleveland’s transformation by providing distinctive school options for no fewer than 6,000 children in 19 schools by 2020. Currently, they have nine schools serving more than 2,500 students throughout Cleveland. On Wednesday, May 14, 2014 Rep. Renacci will visit the Preps Woodland Hills Campus in Cleveland, Ohio.
“On behalf of all the Breakthrough students, teachers, and staff, we applaud Rep. Renacci for his support of HR 10,” said John Zitzner, President of Friends of Breakthrough, the network’s advocacy arm. “This legislation will ensure the availability of critical federal funding for high-quality charter schools, funding that has been essential to enabling Breakthrough to serve more children in Northeast Ohio.”
