Rep. Jim Renacci (OH-16) today was appointed to the Ways & Means Subcommittee on Oversight. The Oversight Subcommittee is a watchdog over the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), as well as programs within the tax-writing and healthcare jurisdiction of the Ways & Means Committee.

“The people of Ohio’s 16th District have made it clear that they want a transparent federal government that respects hardworking taxpayers. From political targeting at the IRS to the botched implementation of the president’s health care law, Americans are frustrated – and rightly so – with the federal government’s lack of accountability. In fact, just recently, we learned that the IRS slashed its own taxpayer service budget by 73 percent while at the same time awarded more than $60 million in bonuses to its employees. Instead of prioritizing customer service, the IRS has spent billions on the health care law’s implementation, millions on an expensive law firm, and lost billions to improper payments. It’s shameful that the IRS isn’t committed to assisting the very people who provide them with paychecks,” said Renacci. “Under Chairman Roskam’s leadership, the Oversight Subcommittee has passed a number of bills, including my Prevent Targeting at the IRS Act, to rein in the IRS. Just last week, the Oversight Subcommittee held a hearing with IRS Commissioner John Koskinen to get to the bottom of the IRS’ gross mismanagement of its funds. I am pleased to join the Oversight Subcommittee and look forward to working with Chairman Roskam to provide the American people with the answers they expect and deserve.”

Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Peter Roskam stated, "I'm pleased to welcome Congressman Renacci to the Subcommittee. Jim brings a wealth of experience dealing with the IRS as a Certified Public Accountant and has a proven track record of fighting for greater transparency and accountability within the federal government. Just this month, the House unanimously passed his important legislation to ensure that IRS employees caught targeting groups based on their political beliefs are fired immediately. I look forward to working with Jim to achieve our oversight goals."

Renacci also serves on the Ways & Means Subcommittees on Select Revenue Measures and Social Security.
