Washington, D.C. – Last Friday, Congressman Renacci (R-OH) sent a letter with his colleagues to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy urging the prioritization of the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

This vital legislation has provided services and support for victims of sexual abuse, dating and domestic violence, and human trafficking for over two decades. Congressman Renacci voted in favor of the last reauthorization in 2013 and believes that this should be a priority for Congress.

“I was pleased to sign onto this letter to underscore the urgent need to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act,” said Renacci. “The contributions of VAWA over the past two and a half decades have bolstered the justice system and the capabilities of law enforcement to respond to crimes of domestic violence and other abuses. Since the passage of the 1994 law, members on both side of the aisle have recognized the importance of understanding and responding to incidents of abuse. Now more than ever, Congress needs to strengthen the programs created by VAWA and maintain the resources that are delivering justice and supporting millions of people in this country.”

VAWA was created to coordinate a national and comprehensive response to address violence against women. It has been expanded by Congress to include programs that address and respond to sexual abuse, stalking, and human trafficking.

VAWA resources are used for services, training and educating members of law enforcement, providing shelter for victims of abuse, and helping victims navigate the justice system.

The state of Ohio receives VAWA grants, which are used to train law enforcement and other legal personnel, support victims through a variety of services, and collect data to better understand the scope of violence against women and other victims of abuse. These programs are critical for victims across the country, and vital to the progress being done to support all victims of abuse and trafficking in Ohio.
