9.2.16: Week In Review
Dear Friend,
This Monday, our country celebrates its 122nd Labor Day. Celebrated the first Monday in September, this holiday serves to recognize the social and economic achievements of American workers who have contributed mightily to the strength and prosperity of the United States through their diligence and hard work. Although much has changed in our country since the first nationally recognized Labor Day in 1894, the industrious and entrepreneurial spirit of the American worker is timeless and lives on.
Washington Wrap-Up
Congress will return to Washington, D.C. after Labor Day. Votes in the House will resume on Tuesday, September 6th.
Next Week: The house will vote on a variety of bills to reform the regulatory process and modify financial regulations, and continue discussing a path forward for the package to mitigate the spread of the Zika virus.
Smucker’s
Smucker’s is headquartered right here in our district, in the City of Orrville, and they continue to help grow our economy. Their company offers a broad range of fruit spreads, ice cream toppings, syrups, peanut butters, and more, including low sugar and sugar free varieties. This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with their newly appointed President and CEO (as of May 2016).
Health Roundtable
I had a great roundtable discussion this week with Cleveland Clinic. Heath facilities like this one help our communities through education, engaging populations to change the course of care for the public. During the roundtable, I heard more about how the rising costs from the Affordable Care Act are burdening their company, and I discussed with them the bills I'm working on - like my Readmissions bill and the Hospital Quality Rating Transparency Act - to provide better access to care for patients.
Facebook Small Business Forum
As the world’s largest social network, there are over 1.9 billion people worldwide on Facebook. The City of Strongsville and the Strongsville Chamber of Commerce hosted a seminar with Facebook to provide the opportunity for Ohioans to learn how to take advantage of this widely-used, accessible, and strategic platform to boost their businesses. It was great to speak at the ‘Facebook Boost Your Business’ event this week.
Tax Roundtable
America is the global leader in technology, energy, finance, and innovation. Yet, our obsolete tax code—one that has not been reformed in 30 years—inhibits our true economic potential and constrains opportunities for all Americans. That is why I introduced SATS (Simplifying America’s Tax System) to delivers a much-needed overhaul. I recognize this overhaul won’t happen overnight. Rather, I view this as the beginning of the conversation and seek your feedback. The tax roundtable held this week was another great way to gain additional feedback to the plan.
