7.15.16: Week In Review
Dear Friend,
Our hearts are with those who have been impacted by another horrific terror attack in France. We must continue to stand with our oldest ally and put these senseless attacks to an end. As authorities continue to investigate, we are reminded just how important it is that we defeat groups like ISIS that are promoting or inspiring such violent acts of terrorism across the globe. It is my hope we can work together to do so.
Simplifying America’s Tax System
It’s clear to me that our nation can’t settle for middle of the pack. We need to tear down the wall of corporate level taxation and jump start our economy with a much needed overhaul. That is why I introduced a tax plan, Simplifying America's Tax System (SATS). SATS is a bold pro-growth solution to business tax reform that would make our tax system the most competitive in the world. It would also lower rates across the board so that Americans of all income levels will see a similar increase in after-tax income. Your success should be up to you, not the tax code. Washington Wrap-Up
This Week: The House passed legislation to strengthen our national security, food safety, and to move forward with our appropriations process. Below are a few of the bills that may be of interest to you:
- H.R. 5631 - To hold Iran accountable for its state sponsorship of terrorism and other threatening activities and for its human rights abuses, and for other purposes. This legislation would impose sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, particularly on entities owned by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), on the country’s illegal ballistic missile program and support for terrorism, as well as on Iran’s numerous human rights abuses.
- S. 764 - GMO Labeling Requirements. The legislation would require that food be labeled with text, a symbol, or an electronic or digital link along with language stating that the method used will direct the consumer to additional information about the product. Manufacturers would be allowed to choose which style to use. It will prevent a patchwork of state laws that food manufacturers will not be able to comply with.
Next Week: The House is in recess so there will not be any votes in the House.
Social Security MAIL Act
This week, my bill with Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson was passed out of the House Ways & Means Committee and will now be reported to the full House of Representatives. The Social Security Administration placed full SSNs on more than 233 million documents in 2015. This commonsense legislation would require the Social Security Administration (SSA) to remove Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from mailed documents when they’re deemed unnecessary and to justify when it is necessary to include SSNs on mailed documents. As a personal victim of identity theft and after hearing many similar stories from American taxpayers, I know that this legislation is vital in safeguarding Americans from identity loss. The Affordable Care Act
The Ways & Means Committee held a full committee hearing on 'Rising Health Insurance Premiums under the Affordable Care Act' (ACA). It is a top priority of mine to ensure Americans have access to affordable health care insurance. Unfortunately, since passage of the ACA, that access has significantly dropped. In the 16th District:
Jimmy Malone Golf Tournament
The Malone scholarship was started by Jimmy Malone and his wife April in 1993. The college scholarships are awarded to students with financial need who have a positive outlook on life; and who have been accepted at an accredited college. With the support of generous donors and sponsors, 55 students were awarded the scholarship this year. Their biggest fundraiser each year is their annual scholarship golf classic at the beautiful Westfield Group Country Club. Earlier this week was the 20th annual tournament, and I had the privilege of meeting with some of the outstanding students.
